Anxiety

Do you frequently feel worried and anxious?  Did you know that anxiety disorders account for the majority of mental health issues in the United States?  In fact, anxiety disorders affect 40 million U.S. adults age 10 and older (18.1% of U.S. population).  A person with an anxiety disorder may be diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), or Specific Phobias; all of these conditions are subcategories of “Anxiety.”  At NDBL, we want you to know that you do not have to suffer alone.  Our goal is to help our clients reduce and recover from their anxiety allowing them to live the life God intended.

Depression

Whether depression rarely rears its ugly head in your life or is frequent, unwelcome visitor, sound clinical counseling can help you decrease depressive symptoms and improve your mood and quality of life.  Do you feel discouraged, sad, hopeless, unmotivated, and have lost interest in the things you used to enjoy?  Are you having trouble sleeping, noticed significant weight loss or gain, and experiencing crying spells?  Do you have low energy, difficulty concentrating, and just don’t feel like yourself?  If so, call us at NDBL for an assessment.

Depression is a treatable condition that affects the way a person thinks, feels, behaves and functions. Depression can present itself in three main types:  major depression, dysthymia (chronic form of depression), and bipolar disorder (characterized by mood cycles from high to low).  The therapists at NDBL are equipped to give you an accurate diagnosis, help you come out of the grip of depression, and enjoy living again.

Anxiety and Depression: When You Have Both

Most people feel anxious or depressed at times.  Difficult situations can lead a person to feel sad, lonely, scared, nervous or anxious.  These feelings are normal reactions to life’s stressors.  However, some people experience these feelings everyday or almost every day for no apparent reason, making it difficult for them to carry on with normal, everyday functioning.  These people may have an anxiety disorder, depression or both (Anxiety Disorder Association of America, 2008).

It is not uncommon for someone with depression to also suffer from an anxiety disorder or vice versa.  Statistics tell us that nearly one-half of those individuals diagnosed with a major depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.  But there is hope--these disorders are both treatable—separately and together.  At NDBL, experienced therapists will properly assess, diagnose and treat you with sound psychological principles and Biblical truth paving the way to your healing and wholeness.

Marriage Counseling

We understand that couples often fall into the habit of hiding their feelings whenever they have conflicting desires and this always has a toxic effect on their relationship. Resentment and anger build up and eventually the little happinesses they enjoy together - feelings of peace, safety, wonderful sex, contentment - are weakened or spoiled.  How to be true to one's self and yet remain close to the other in an emotionally intimate, passionate, caring relationship is often not easy or clear. As a result, couples can require counseling to get back on track.

Some important questions to ask yourself include:  Are you meeting your partner’s needs?  Do your conflicts threaten to derail you?  Are you fighting fair?  Do you have a negative attitude toward your spouse?  Would you like some help to improve your marriage?  Let the expertly trained clinicians at NDBL help you with the skills you need to create the marriage God intended for you and your spouse to enjoy.

Teens

The teen years can be the hardest period of anyone’s life.  At NDBL, we have been fortunate to work and bond with extraordinary teenagers who are intelligent, sensitive, and, sometimes, troubled.  We recognize our teenaged clients’ unique strengths as well as the struggles they face—especially in today’s culture.

If a teen in your life is struggling, please consider contacting us.  We’ve found that an open, trusting relationship with a therapist who genuinely enjoys working with teens can make all the difference in a teen’s life.  Attentive listening and mutual respect are the foundation of our practice with teens.  Let us help you guide your teen through these exciting years and opportunities and successfully transition them into their destined adult role.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse

Are you concerned about your use of substances? Below are a few simple questions, please take some time out to answer.

  • Do you think about drinking or doing drugs when you are sober? Is it a goal?
  • Do your family and friends tell you that you drink too much?
  • Do you lose time (black out) while drinking or doing drugs?
  • Does it take more alcohol or drugs than it used to feel the same "buzz' or "high"?
  • Do you make it a priority above all to find drugs?
  • Have you missed work or family functions due to hangovers?
  • Has your job been affected by your use of alcohol or drugs?
  • Are you experiencing any health problems due to alcohol of drug use?
  • Have you ever had a drunken driving charge?
  • Have you experienced loss of control when drinking-"one isn't enough" or you can't stop once you start?
  • Have you had negative consequences related to drinking or drugs but continue to do it despite these?
If you have answered "yes" to more than one of these it may be helpful to have a professional assessment.  Let one of NDBL’s caring professionals assist you in achieving your goal of successful sobriety.

Anger

There are as many reasons that people get angry as there are people in the world. What may be a specific trigger or hot button for one person will have no affect at all on another. Yet, there are some provocations that we can agree have some affect on most, if not all, of us.

Why do people have such strong anger reactions? It could be due to any number of reasons, such as, personal triggers or “hot buttons” that are almost always tied in to childhood experiences (most of which have been forgotten on a conscious level), learned behavior, frustrated desires, feeling disrespected, or feeling something is unfair, just to name a few.  Let the expert counselors at NDBL help you identify the root issues of your anger problem and help you learn the skills necessary to manage your emotions in appropriate, healthy ways.

Adjustments / Life Transitions

As we all know, life can be stressful.  Adults usually develop adjustment problems to stressors related to marital discord, finances, or work.  In teens, common stressors include school problems, family or parents’ marital problems, or sexuality issues.  Other types of stressors include death of a loved one, life changes, unexpected catastrophes, medical conditions such as cancer and subsequent treatments.

There is no way to predict which individuals are likely to develop an adjustment problem or disorder, given the same stressor.  Factors that influence how well a person reacts to stress may include economic conditions, availability of social supports, and occupational and recreational opportunities.  Personal susceptibility to stress may include such factors as social skills, intelligence, genetics and coping strategies.

If you’re have having difficulty coping with stress, struggles, or life change, let one of the professionals at NDBL help you through the tough times of today into a brighter tomorrow.
